Shot by a paintball #!&$#!…

image

I git up extra early this morning to go to Kailua. On my way down Date St. a click a distinct ‘crack’ and felt sharp pain on my right leg. I slowed, reached down and rubbed the area. It was wet. I brought my hand up expecting blood but even in the predawn dark I could tell it was the wrong color. Then I heard laughter and a car peeling out and it dawned on me…I’d been shot all right, but by a paintball gun. I couldn’t see the license plate so there wasn’t much I could do but press on. I had a great ride otherwise but I’m still a bit ticked off. Sigh.

You can make out the bruise on my leg. It looks like a ring. It still hurts a bit too: six hours later.

Aloha indeed!

Good week…busy, busy,busy…

I had a good week prepping for RAGBRAI; I rode just shy of 160 miles. That put’s me about 30 miles short of 1500 since April 10th when I started keeping track. My initial goal was to ride 1550 miles before RAGBRAI so really I’m almost done. Not, of course, that I’ll pull over and take the bus home when I get 1550.
Today I didn’t ride which gives you an idea of how much I rode this week to get that 160. I rode to Haleiwa on Sunday and then on Thursday I rode to Kailua after work. I had a presentation to give there after work and it was a beautiful day so…off I went. I ride pretty slow but Thursday was one of my better days and I ended up with time to kill so I just biked around once I got there and hung out at the beach for bit:

Today I tore down a set of my MKS Grip King (Lamda) pedals, repacked the bearings, and put them on my Friday. Now I have to break down the set I took off and put them on my QB. I swapped in the set that I modified a bit to make “grippier.”
Now it’s off to dinner and a good nights sleep. Tomorrow, weather willing, is a riding day!
Aloha.

Slow ride, take it easy…

I had a nice long slow ride to Haleiwa today. It took 10 freakin’ hours, not because I rode at 7 miles an hour though. It was a combination of rain, a birthday (not mine), and lunch. On the way out this morning I realized I’d be going close to (one of) my auntie’s house. It’s her birthday so stopped for a card and dropped it off (normally I’d just call). She was pleased to see me and we had a nice short visit which turned into a nice long visit as it started pouring.
Really pouring.
Finally it let up enough for me to make it … about a quarter mile before it opened up again. Luckily I did have a rain jacket so I kept going. It didn’t last long.
I continued on to Waimanalo where…yep, it poured again and I had to wait another half hour…at least.
The rest of the ride was dry and at times simply super. It was just a plain lot of fun. I tuckered out though so I’m done!
Aloha

Next year already?

Boy, how soon we forget…I haven’t even done RAGBRAI yet and my minds already has started turning to next year. I’m thinking Oregon.
I have a sister who lives in Portland with her family and my Bike Friday is, after all, from Eugene so I got thinking…

  1. Fly into Portland
  2. Ride to Eugene
Have my BF overhauled (it’ll be four next year)
  3. Do the Adventure Tours Coastal Odyssey ride
  4. Ride back to Portland and fly home

It’s more than a year away but it does sound like a fun plan. Of course I could just fly in and out of Eugene, but I like the idea of the extra miles and perhaps an overnight in Salem or Corvalis. Hmmm…
Aloha!

VelOahu…

In a fit of late night madness, probably inspired by too much pizza and a GoDaddy coupon, I purchased the domain name VelOahu.com. Currently it points back here but I’m trying to decide what I should really do with the darn thing. I own a couple of domain names that are probably pretty stupid but, since they don’t cost much, may inspire me to do something with them.
Statrix, this domain, actually was going to be for a business of mine about 14 years ago. It’s short for statistical tricks (like stats and Trix are for kids). Of course the business never went anywhere and I ended up using it for…well mostly everything.
VelOahu is, of course, the conjunction of Velo and Oahu. VeloOahu looked stupid to me so…veloahu it is. But what to do with it…well here’s one thing. 🙂
VelOahu Cap
It’s hard to get a flattering shot with a self-held camera phone, especially with the raw materials I have, but the cap is nice.
It’s from Walz Cap who make great cycling caps. At least I think they’re great, this is my first. They had a deal a few weeks back with the Yehuda Moon comic strip to get free embroidery with a cap. Naturally enough I decided I’d have to have my very own VelOahu cap.
I’ll be wearing it during RAGBRAI of course. This particular cap is a moisture wicking cap in burgundy and grey (almost my high school colors actually – Shorewood WI – go Greyhounds!).
I didn’t think I’d actually care for to have a cycling cap for the longest time and now that it’s on my head I love it. I’m definitely going to have to get a few more.

1200 miles…

On Saturday I finished ten of fifteen weeks of training for RAGBRAI according to the training plan put out on the RAGBRAI site. I ridden a total of 1200 miles in that time, or about 120 miles a week. The plan called for only 930 miles in that time, so I’m a bit ahead of the game. Every mile I ride ahead of schedule is going to make RAGBRAI that much more enjoyable.
There are five weeks left to go for a planned total of 1550. I’m really hoping I can continue to ride ahead of schedule, even the second to last week with 175 miles planned. I’ve got a bit of a buffer, but I don’t want to dip into it.
Now I know there are a lot of folks out there who’d consider this fairly low mileage but I’m not training for a race. All I really need to do is enjoy myself and I can guarantee you that I’m doing just that right now.
Today, day one of week eleven, I rode almost 40 miles of this week’s 100 (light week). My Bike Friday really felt great on her new Schwalbe Marathon Plus 20×1.75 tires. The extra width really makes a difference from the Marathon (not Plus) 20×1.50 tires I was riding. If anything I’m even faster on them because they are more comfortable (though frankly any extra speed is probably due to all the cycling I’ve been doing).
Here’s the Friday I’m doing all this riding on now…

Because of the frame replacement I rode more than half of my 1200 on my Quickbeam, but I’m pleased to be back on the Friday. It’s what’s going to Iowa so I really need to get used to riding it mile after mile. So far, so good.
Aloha!

Almost too quick…

Geez, all the stuff I ordered from Bike Friday arrived yesterday. That was really, really quick. I’ve paid about the same in shipping from other bike companies and it’s taken…well quite a while would be accurate. Thanks Green Gear!
Of course that means I’ve got to put it all together now…so when I get home well reshod the NWT, put the slick new bag on and…what else was there? Oh yeah, the bottom waterbottle cage. Slick.
Aloha…gotta run!
Oops, before I forget…go to Slow Art Friday, it’s tonight! They have a bike valet I’m told!

Bits and pieces…

Yesterday my wristband from RAGBRAI arrived:

I also ordered a few bits and pieces from Bike Friday to finish off the bike before I go. Top on my list was a new set of tires. My big concern is not speed, I’m slow enough that any tire is faster than I need as long as it isn’t flat. That would be my big concern. High on the list is comfort as well.
I’ve been riding Schwalbe Marathons at 20×1.50 which have so far proved mostly bulletproof. I’d originally had a part of Kenda Kontacts as 20×1.75 which were comfortable but almost immediately flatted. It happened again a few months later with even worse results, a ripped sidewall. I’ve had no such trouble with the Marathons (knock on wood).
Still they are getting a little long in the tooth to trust on a cross state ride. I’d wear ’em right down to the tube here as I know I can catch TheBus back home but the middle of Iowa is a different story. The solution, of course, is to reshod my bike before I go. The 20×1.5s were purchased because I couldn’t get anything else locally and needed tires quickly. This time I’m going up a step in size, back to 20×1.75 (love that cushy ride) and in quality (if possible). Schwalbe claims:

Punctures become obsolete with the MARATHON PLUS! The SmartGuard layer made from a flexible, special rubber offers particular resistance to shards of glass and flints. Even a thumbtack cannot penetrate this protective layer. The SmartGuard belt does not increase rolling resistance.

If my experience with the regular Marathons means anything, they may be right.
I’d already replaced the cabling and brakes before my frame troubles so they are essentially brand new. I’ll probably grab a new set of pads to take along, but that’ll pretty much do it on that end. What else?
I did purchase a new rear fender to replace the one I have that is cracked in half (bad packing on one trip or another) and an “underbag” for my folding rear rack. It’s just a little bag that sits under the rack instead of on top of it.

It’ll hold my tools and tubes and such.
I also am adding another waterbottle cage under the frame to I can carry enough water to beat the Iowa sun (though I plan on stopping at every lemonade stand I can find as well and I suspect there’ll be lots of vendors along the way).
My bottles are green, of course, to match my bike. Sigh. Vanity, vanity.
I’ve already gotten all my clothes and camping stuff together so that really just leaves toiletries. It’s suggested to bring along lots of packs of tissues (as opposed to the rolled kind) as well as a variety of wipes. I also need some bug stuff to beat off the mosquitoes. Basically we are talking about a trip to Long’s.
It’s all coming together. I’m even doing well on the mileage. Of the 1550 miles I plan to ride before RAGBRAI I’m already clocked about 1140 (73%). At the end of last week I was about 250 miles ahead of schedule so in fact my 1550 will probably be about 1800, but who’s counting? Actually now that I see 1800 on paper (as it were), I’m tempted to make it an even 2000. I rode 140 the week before the training plan actually started so if I just toss in an extra 60 miles somewhere I can honestly claim 2000 miles in the weeks leading up to RAGBRAI. To be honest I think it’ll be nice to be done with counting miles when this is all over. \
I just wish I could ride the Honolulu Century ride this year (other obligations). It’s not my favorite local ride (Haleiwa Metric Century), but after all this riding I figure I’d be ready for it as I’ve never been before.
Speaking of local rides, I noticed there’s a memorial ride coming up that basically circles the island over the course of two days. It’s a memorial/awareness ride honoring the Zachary Manago who died while riding last December:
I haven’t decided if I’m going to make the ride yet, it’ll probably be too fast for me (though the distance isn’t a problem) and I’d hate to be out at Kaena Point by my lonesome.
Aloha!

Back from Hilo…

I’m back from Hilo where I spent a very relaxing weekend doing as little as possible. That little bit did include about 75 miles of cycling including a couple of trips up to the Panaewa Zoo, a lovely ride. Here’s a shot of the Wailuku River as I passed over the “singing bridge” (so called because of the sound of tires on the metal grating) looking up river.
Wailuku River
I didn’t get in quite as many miles as I’d have liked this weekend due to a broken spoke. I really, really, really need new wheels for my old Raleigh. The ones I have are mostly rust.
Aloha!

Left a few for Hilo…miles that is…

Well I’m going to have to fit in 19 miles of riding in Hilo by the end of Saturday to get my 120 in for the week. It’s sort of interesting how 19 miles, which used to be a goodly distance for me a couple of years back, now seems like something to toss off. I’ll enjoy riding them, but it won’t seem like much.
Next week will be a challenge though. My schedule shows that I need 130 miles for the week and I probably won’t be able to ride on Sunday and will only be able to add a couple on Monday before coming home. That means I’ll have to count on a long ride on Saturday. Luckily the following week drops a bit again to 100 so I won’t have to double up too much with back to back Saturday and Sunday distance fests. That’ll come soon enough.
My weeks to RAGBRAI look like this:
120 (This week – almost pau)
130
100
130
150
175
65 (travel week)
454
It would be easy enough to get in 140 a week with 20 a day if I had a bit more time but it seems the rest of my life definitely requires some attention as well.
I’m also debating some new tires for the Friday. I’m riding on Schwalbe Marathon 20×1.50’s right now which are fine and fairly bullet proof. I’m thinking of moving up to 20×1.75 for some extra cushioning. Speed is never really an issue with me. I’m slow on all tires.
Decisions, decisions. I’m glad I’m not waiting for a new frame though (at least not any longer).
Aloha
