Midway through RAGBRAI my rear brake failed because of a broken stud. It seemed odd, but luckily a mech in a passthrough town was able to find a bolt long enough to get me back on the road.
Now, of course, I have to do something about it. I talked with the Bike Friday folks and the want me to ship back the rear triangle. And that’s the snag. I don’t have the tools to get the rear triangle off of the rest of the frame. It seems that on my model there’s hollow pin that holds the triangle to the rest of the frame. In newer models it’s a bolt and that would be quite easy to deal with. Sadly on mine it’s not quite that easy. Sigh.
So today I stripped the bike down to the frame. It’s going to be a pain to put back together even though it’s really only the “easy” parts (nothing like the bottom bracket or headset).
Now I have to dredge up a box and ship it off, but at least it’s more or less ready to go…
Slower, cheaper, less useful…
